ASN (Autonomous system number) registration – RIPE NCC FAQ

Can I apply for ASN registration by myself?

You can do it in case you’re a RIPE NCC member (LIR). If you’re not a LIR, you shall find another RIPE NCC member (LIR) as a sponsoring organization. Only LIR can send an application to register ASN for your company. After the ASN registration, the LIR becomes a Sponsoring LIR and responsible for your ASN and data in the RIPE database. This service is called ASN support (ASN sponsoring LIR support/PI support). Please note we as a RIPE NCC member (LIR) can provide you both AS registration and ASN support services. The first year of ASN support is free of charge.

I’m a natural person residing in the RIPE NCC service region. Am I eligible to obtain an ASN?

Yes, the ASN can be registered for natural person, legal entity or individual entrepreneur.

What are the main requirements to register ASN with RIPE NCC?

You shall have 2 peering partners (emails and ASNs) and a subnet you would like to announce after the ASN registration.

My company is registered outside the RIPE NCC service region – am I eligible to register an AS with RIPE NCC?

You can register an ASN with RIPE NCC, but in case you’re registered outside the RIPE NCC, you shall prove that you’re intended to use it in the RIPE NCC service region. If your company is registered outside the RIPE NCC service region but you plan to use in the RIPE NCC service region and you decide to register an ASN with us we will help you to reach a successful result.

What are the fees to register an ASN in the RIPE NCC service region?

Our ASN registration service fee is 199 EUR (ex.VAT). This price includes the first year of ASN support. There’re no any additional fees to register an ASN.

My company is registered in the RIPE NCC service region, but i want to use it in ARIN service region – am I eligible to register an ASN with RIPE NCC?

If you don’t plan to use an ASN in the RIPE NCC service region you shall register an ASN with another RIR.

How long does it take for ASN to be registered?

If you have an easy case (a company registered in the RIPE NCC service region, the usage is in the RIPE NCC service region) then the ASN registration usually takes 2-3 business days after we get all the required information from you and invoice is paid.

If i don’t have a subnet yet to register an ASN can I apply for ASN registration?

We support IPv6 implementation, therefore we can provide you a /48 IPv6 subnet for 1 month absolutely free of charge. Then, if you decide to keep a subnet, we will sign a long-term contract on IPv6 lease at our standard fee.

Can I manage RIPE object with ASN information after the ASN registration?

Yes, you can. You will get an access to the AS-object with your maintainer connected to your ripe.net account (mnt-by, mnt-routes)

Can I update peers after the ASN registration?

Yes, you can, but you shall always have at least 2 peering partners.

What happens if I don’t want to pay for ASN support?

If you don’t have a sponsoring LIR or your own LIR then the ASN deregistration process will apply. It’s made by RIPE NCC after the ASN loses sponsoring ORG (LIR). Therefore, you have to pay either for ASN support or for the RIPE membership. ASN support is much cheaper than LIR registration. Please note that if you register an ASN with us the first year ASN support with us is free of charge.
